Poetry as Spiritual Practice: Marla Taviano’s WHOLE
On a poetic resource for faith transitions and beyond...
Ready for some liberating poetry?
I’ve talked before about how my friend
has been writing an amazing poetry trilogy, giving a window into the experience of faith transition—with humor, heart, and honesty. The third book of that trilogy—whole—comes out today, and I highly recommend you read it (and the first two of the series, unbelieve and jaded) if (1) you are experiencing a faith transition yourself or (2) you wish to understand and listen to loved ones who are experiencing faith transitions. But whole, this last book of the trilogy? It holds an extra special place in my heart: I got to be involved in the publishing process, as a beta reader, then as a freelance copyeditor/proofreader for Lake Drive Books, and then as a blurb-er (my first blurb—eee!). I’m so amazed to see this incredible book out in the world and honored that I got to be a part of its cheerleading team.
More than that, Marla is a friend of mine, and I’m just so freaking proud of her and all the work she’s doing. Her wisdom, wit, and cheerleading-for-my-weirdness have held me through some tough times in my own journey, and her words have been so inspiring and encouraging to me and many others.
If you’re still not convinced to read this gorgeous book, here’s what I wrote in my blurb:
“For anyone who has weathered the storm of deconverting from high-control religion, Marla Taviano’s whole is a rainbow of humor, heart, joy, and justice. This is a must-read poetry collection for anyone wondering what’s next after faith. It’s a poetic path paved with honesty and hope.”
So what are you waiting for? Go read this book!
